Shopping:

Käsespezialitäten Am Münsterplatz: Cheese
Cheeses from around the world are the order of the day at kasespezialitaten. Markethalle
The Markethalle takes place on the Münster Square in front of the cathedral, and is open every weekday from 7am to 1pm. Here, vendors offer a large variety of fruits and vegetables. On one side, farmers sell local fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, sausages and bread, as well as teas and spices. On the other side, craftspeople sell wooden toys, carvings and candles, many of them from the Black Forest. As they have for centuries, Freiburg’s residents come to the marketplace at least once a week—usually Saturday—to do their shopping. Even though it may be less convenient or more expensive than going to a supermarket, the locals know not only where the goods came from, but also the families who produce them. It’s tradition.

The Old Quarter
A stroll through Freiburg's lively old quarter is always a delight. As well as department stores and specialty shops, there are fashion boutiques, perfumeries, jewelers, bookstores, art and antique stores, toy shops and leather goods shops. The lower old town between Haupstrasse and the river along Unterestrasse is a restored section of town of smart looking homes, enchanting courtyards, unusual specialty shops, neighborhood restaurants, bakeries and cafes that are favorites of locals and tourists alike.

Black Forest Region
The Black Forest region is known for its handicrafts. Cuckoo clocks are still made (and sold) here, as they have been for centuries, along with hand-carved wood items and exquisite examples of glassblowing. Of course, don’t leave without picking up one of Germany’s prized Black Forest hams, or one of the specialty wines of the region.

Overview:

You like to travel but you’re no tourist. No guidebooks. No sightseeing buses. No package deals. You know the best accommodations, things to do and places to eat and drink are not found in Fodor’s. The only way to find these secret spots is to ask the locals. And that’s exactly what we did. For each destination featured on the right, we’ve asked the people who live there to list their favorite restaurants, bars, inns and things to do. So when you go, you’ll be in the know.
