The Dordogne
No visit to the Dordogne region is complete without touring the caves of Lascaux, dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory.” Created around 15,000 B.C. by some pretty talented prehistoric artists, the cave walls are adorned with impressive paintings of ancient landscapes and extinct beasts. Because of its deterioration, Lascaux II was created for the public to tour. There are over five miles of caverns that can be explored by electric train, shuttling you through an extraordinarily skillful, inch-by-inch replica of the original cave. Later in the day, attend the Village Life Forum, where local residents discuss contemporary issues of the region.
